US prohibition of alcohol amendment
Some organizations saw that after the American revolution, drinking of alcohol was on the rise among the society, so these organizations tried to push moderation. This movement later changed its focus to try and bring the complete prohibition of alcohol consumption.
The 18th Amendment went into effect on January 16, 1920 which which prohibited the sale and manufacture of alcohol.
Gangsters sought to make profit from this imbalance of supply and demand. One famous gangster during this time was Al Capone from Chicago. Alcohol was smuggled from Canada, Carribean islands and secret bars (speakeasies) were opened for the public.
In this present age we have people who drive drunk and sometimes get arrested for DUI.
DUI as a cause of accidents also is becoming common.
US prohibition of alcohol amendment
This prohibition caused a lot of fights, loss of life and after the great depression the government decided to repeal this amendment on December 5, 1933 through the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The 21st Amendment was made to repeal the 18th Amendment.
Once again alcohol was made legal. It is also interesting to note that this was the first time in U.S. history that an Amendment has been repealed.
